Lake Tyers has many places to
launch canoes and explore.
The launch site illustrated here is leaving from the picnic area just
before the
boat parking at Number 2 Boat Ramp. It is a sheltered and a
gradual slope and would good for beginners to get their balance before
heading off.
The open waters of the Lake are to the north of this point so take care
if an onshore (southerly) breeze is strong.
Our
trip took about an hour of steady, but not frantic paddling to leave,
go around the islands and return. Much of the water was
shallow
at this stage of the year. There was a 10km/hr southerly
blowing
at the time.
Quietly paddling along was an ideal vantage point to observe the bird
life on the edges of the island.
Just keep in mind that Lake Tyers opens
to the sea from time to time and the huge, but shortlived currents cut
quite deep channels, and the water depth can change from shallow to
several metres very quickly.
