Keep a copy of the boating regulations handy on your boat so your are up to date about the Victorian laws on boating.

The operator of the boat must have a current Victorian Marine Licence (or equivalent).

The boat must be equipped properly, that is fitted out with all safety and operational gear. Some of the areas this concerns are:
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
  • Fire extinguisher 
  • Bucket with lanyard
  • Bailer
  • Bilge pumping
  •  Lifebuoy
  • Waterproof buoyant torch
  • Anchor and chain
  • Dinghy or life raft
  • Distress flares, signals and rockets
  • Marine radio
  • Approved emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB)
  • Compass

Depending on the size of your vessel and where you intend to use it (ie in the lake system or in the open ocean) these requirements differ and will pay operators to be very familiar with these rules and regulations.

Victorian Water Police


When you visit Lake Tyers don't forget that this area of the Victorian waterways is actively patrolled by the Victorian Water Police and that people in charge of boats are expected to obey all the rules and regulations.

As these photo's show they don't turn up in candy coloured high speed boats, but can be very effective in a small tinny and could be just in the boat around the next sand spit or in the next bay.
