2010 ARCHIVE

DEC
29th December 2010: Flatties are popular....
Three FlattiesThe weather has finally settled and the fish are firing up.  Good reports of Flathead on both plastics and bait - best baits are Prawn, Bluebait and Pilchards. A few Tailor being taken on lures and bait, but a wire trace is needed if bait fishing.  Bream are a bit harder to find but a vibe is best option. The surf is producing Salmon, Tailor and some Snapper and best bait is Bluebait and fish on the top or bottom of the tide.  If trying for gummies at night try Eel and Squid. Enjoy your holidays and   get amongst them Pagey

16th December 2010: Flatties after Prawns

Lake Tyers has continued to be the place to be this week with the lake alive with Flathead.  Both plastics and bait are producing good results with the Flatties full of Prawns.  The Luderic have moved from Mill Point and I have not heard where they have gone to.  A few Tailor on the trawl on any type of lure.  The surf is still a little slow with some Salmon on Pilchard and Squid or lures on the quick retreive.  Best you get your plastic rods and  get amongst them Pagey

6th December 2010: Plastic fantastics

Well while the weather has not been kind, but the fishing has been good. Some very nice bags of Flathead on plastics in the bottom of the lake, including a great mornings catch by renowned local fisherman Dave Stevenson using pearl slider lizards walking the flats, as well as having a couple of big hits that eluded him.  Good reports of Luderic around Mill Point best time seems to be afternoons.
The surf quitened off a little this week due to the amount of weed being picked up on lines.  That will change as soon as wind dies.  I would be getting the plastic lures out and  get amongst them Pagey

30th November 2010: Another good week

We have seen another good week at Lake Tyers many good Flatties taken on plastics all through the system, Dave The HOCK Hocking reported a great catch from the bank at Burnt Bridge using lizards and white slider plastics during the week.  They are taking Prawn, Bluebait and Pilchard in the bottom lake.  Not a lot of Bream about, but best bait is Prawn.  Luderic in the afternoon around Mill Point on weed.
The surf is producing Salmon on lures, and Pilchard and Squid are the best bait. It looks like being a great Xmas with everyone catching fish, so dust off those rods and get amongst them Pagey

27th November 2010: Switched on!!

Lake Tyers is now officially switched on.  With water temp rising Flathead have arrived in numbers onto the flats and bottom lake.
Good reports about the Glass House, the channel markers, Blackfellows Arm, Mill Point and Fishermans Landing.  My ever favorite white sliders accounting for many of the Flatties on plastics but a variety of colours is always important as conditions can change their preferences.
Best bait is Prawn and Pilchard but I would try Bluebait or White bait with Prawn.  Bream are hard work with a few catches reported around Mill Point.  There have been a few Luderic late afternoon at the point as well.
The surf has had a dose of weed last weekend which spoilt it, but as conditions return to normal it will improve as it has been productive all year.  So ther has never been a better time to   get amongst them Pagey
NOV

10th November 2010: Lake definitely hotting up...

Things are hotting up at Lake Tyers with some really nice Flathead being taken mostly on plastics they have arrived in good numbers down in the bottom lake with the water temp getting to 20 deg during the week.
Some Tailor about so have a trawl if your keen on them with any sort of lure.  Bream have been a little harder to find but up at Devils Hole and Camerons Hole there have been a few caught on Prawns.
The surf is still giving anglers some Salmon - best bait is Pilchard and Squid, and the ones casting lasers or flashmasters on spinning rigs are having fun on the top of the tide, so its time to get your gear in order and  get amongst them Pagey

4th November 2010: On the move...

It's all started at Lake Tyers over the last week the Flathead have been active, and have made the trip down to the bottom lake.  Aaron Headland has spent a few days this week chasing Flatties on plastics and having great success - best colours white, pumpkin seed and anything green.  He reported 5 fish over 60cm, and many over 35cm. All were returned to the water.  Not many bream reported, but what have been are on bait - either prawn or shrimp and the odd one on hard bodies.
The water temp is now 19-20 degrees and this has turned them on.
The surf continues to produce fish on both bait and lures.  Best bait is Pilchard and Squid with a few Gummies on Eel on the last full moon.  It's all looking good so dust off the gear and  get amongst them Pagey
OCT

21 October 2010: The signs are positive...

Sent a good mate and great fisherman Dave the"Hock" Hocking up to Burnt Bridge,Cherry Tree, Long Point and Crystal Bay to try some plastics from the bank, and bingo, the Flathead are there and starting to be active.  The rain has clouded the water enough, and with the temperature starting to rise - it is just starting to happen, white was his best result but he did try a variety of colours. (How deep is the lake?) Bait fishermen should stay with Prawns and Pilchards and you will get results.
The surf seems to have quitened off a little , although the weather last weekend was so bad, not many tried,I would stick with Pilchard and Squid, and fish either the top or low tide, and flick a few lures while the surf rods are set. It's all about to happen so get amongst them Pagey

10 October 2010: Things are beginning to move...

Reports coming into the shop this week have been varied. Some have had some great results with Bream continuing to take Prawn around Camerons Arm with some nice Trevally appearing in the deeper drop offs.  I have had mixed reports on Flathead with some taking plastics up around  Burnt Bridge and some on bait, Pilchard being the first choice.
The surf remains the most reliable option with good catches of Salmon, on both bait and lures at the top of the tide, Pilchard and Squid the best bait.  So dust off those rods and   get amongst them Pagey

2 October 2010: Back in town...

Thanks guys I have finally been able to get back to the shop and normallity.  Looking forward to some fishing in coming weeks.
31cm Bream Lake TyersWith daylight saving starting this weekend we all have no excuses.  Some good reports filtering in about some nice flathead appearing at Cherry Tree and Burnt Bridge and along the bank at Long Point so they are starting their journey into the lake system.  Prawn and Pilchard is bait of choice.  Some Bream around Camerons Arm on lures and vibes (see Wardy's 31cm catch left, near the Island on Prawn).
The surf has been amazing with continued good catches of Salmon on lures and the bait fishermen using Pilchard.
The warmer weather is bringing the lake temperature up and in turn the fish will get active so make the most of it and get out and  get amongst them Pagey (PS Check the lake level report).
AUG SEP

24 August 2010: Signs are good...

With better weather and some water flowing into the lake the fishing is showing some positive signs,a few Bream being caught late after noon at Mill Point best bait Prawn.
Not many Flathead, yet but only a month to go, and they will show up around Burnt Bridge during Grand Final week.  The surf will give you as many Salmon as you want  fishing on the top of the tide with lures, however if you want to try bait fishing best bait is Pilchard or Bluebait, but good signs alround so get your gear and get amongst them Pagey (PS Check the lake level report).

5 August 2010: Lake rising at last...

Good rain has seen the lake rise during the week and in turn the water has dirtied up a fair bit. This could be what we need to start the fish activity with some good reports coming into the shop. Best bet is still up the arms. Try prawns and pilchard for bait or with lures, hard bodies and vibes in the deep drop offs .
The surf has been great with both bait and lures attracting some nice Salmon.  Best time is on either high or low tide.  This last week has seen a big improvement it may well be the start of we have been waiting for, so    - get amongst them Pagey
JUL

23 July 2010: Been Busy...

After a weekend fishing the twin rivers its time to concentrate on Lake Tyers again.  The surf is continuing to produce good catches on lures and bait with best being Bluebait and Pilchard. The lake is seeing a lot of fishermen and not many fish, its a bit hard.  You need to work up high in the system around Camerons hole and Devil's Hole will produce nice bream on vibes and hard bodies and if bait fishing use Prawn and fish the deeper drop offs the hard work will provide worthwhile results. SO get out and   - get amongst them Pagey

2 July 2010: Surf Frenzy...

This week we saw an unusual happening on the surf.  We noticed heavy bird activity on Thursday afternoon diving after what turned out to be white bait, but what happened next was different.  A large school of Couta and Salmon savaged the white bait driving the bait fish right into the surf break and up onto the beach.  Large numbers of Couta were taken by anglers throwing any type of lure into the frenzy causing great fun on light gear.
The lake on the other hand was hard work this week with over 40 anglers in our Fishing Comp on saturday and Jenny Sutton taking out the best Bream, her second win in two years. Bad luck boys better luck next time.
Some fish are being caught up at Burnt Bridge on Prawn and Pilchard, and if you have a boat, try the deep drop offs, as they continue to shelter the bigger bream.  Try blades and hard bodies around the snags its starting to pay off so. So get out and  - get amongst them Pagey
JUN

17 June 2010: Bank or Boat?

The long weekend proved again that there is good fishing at Lake Tyers.  Boat vs bank is the question I get asked most, the answer is simple it depends what type of fish you are targeting.  The Bream are in the deep drop offs, either Prawn, or if using vibes, it is the place to be. Flathead are up the arms and in the deeper parts of the lake still taking plastics and Pilchards are producing results.
Some Luderic starting to appear again, a great fish to target from the bank up around Long Point and I suspect they will be at Cherry tree soon.
The surf has slowed off slightly due to some rough weather but still getting reports of Salmon on Bluebait and lures so with our big fishing competition on June 26th it is looking good.  With over $1000 dollars worth of prizes up for grabs, everyone has a chance to win.  So get out and   - get amongst them Pagey

4 June 2010: Guss on the job, and pays off!

Taking advantage of the good weather I have managed a couple of afternoons fishing this week with "No Fuss Guss", a local guru on the lake. Well we proved it again, after fishing a few usually good Bream spots, we headed for some deep water drop offs, and hang on to your rod - the big Bream had come to play on local Prawn and at the end of the day we had a very productive catch including a couple of Flathead.  We kept 2 Bream for a feed and returned the rest to the water might get them again in the fishing comp on june 26th.
The surf copped a beating in the heavy weather last weekend so haven't heard anything this week. I am going there myself this afternoon to  - get amongst them Pagey
MAY

27 May 2010: On the lookout...

Lake Tyers Beach has been quite for reports this week with my usual sources going to ground with the weather.  I know the surf is still producing some nice catches on Bluebait and Pilchards and a few still on lures,  The lake is seeing some Bream on local Prawn and the odd Flathead on plastics
I am getting out myself this weekend to find the Bream.  I will start on the drop offs, then chasing deeper water so I can answer the question as to where the fish are for the Tavern's Fishing Comp on 26th of June so join me and   get amongst them Pagey

21 May 2010: Action harder to find

Well Lake Tyers has produced a week very similar to last week.  A few Bream in the deeper drop offs best bait remains local Prawn.  I have had some Melbourne boys achieving some success on vibes but once again in 10ft plus of water, and working hard on the sounder to find them.
The surf keeps on keeping on with some nice Salmon and still the odd Snapper being taken, if you don't want to use lures then best baits are Bluebait and Squid.
I have had a lot enquiries about the Tavern's Fishing Comp on 26th of June it is for both Lake Tyers and surf and is a Bream and Salmon comp and anyone can register at the tackle shop next to the Tavern, there are some great prizes displayed on the Tavern wall already for you to see what is to be won! So do some early pre-fishing to establish your target areas and  get amongst them Pagey

14 May 2010: Salmon running hot!

The Surfs up and the Salmon are running hot taking both lures and baits.  This has caused a lot of excitment all week. Best bait is Pilchard and Bluebait best lure - blue flashmasters.  There are some big Tailor amongst them as well.  The lake has been a bit harder with few Bream and Flathead being reported but with the rain this week, as well as some water coming over the bar, the extra salt might stir them up.
Looking forward to the Waterwheel Tavern's Fishing Competition on Saturday the 26th of June with 2 sections, catering for surf and lake anglers with great prizes so  get amongst them Pagey

6 May 2010: Where's the water?

Well we finally got Melbourne's weather, any water in the lake will be welcome.  Reports coming to the tackle shop this week have been varied.  Some getting good Bream with best bait Prawns, a few Flathead on plastics, but they are slow and you will need to work the plastics slower to entice them. The surf is remaining a good option with good catches and a variety of fish - best baits, Bluebait, Pilchard and Squid.  Those using flashmaster lures on the surf are getting both Salmon and Tailor which is always a lot of fun so  get amongst them Pagey

1 May 2010: Fish not on holidays, and biting!

I have been fishing solid for the last 2 weeks with friends and relatives coming to visit with the holiday season over, but the good thing is the fish dont know.  Plenty of quality Bream taking local Prawn un-peeled on up to 2/0 hooks.  If you are in a boat use your sounder you will find them in 3 to 5 meters of water and vibes will provide some action. Some Flathead still taking plastics.  I have found white sliders best used a little slower than usual, as the Flatties are laying a little doggy, but they are still taking bait and I have had some great hits on Garfish which are everywhere in the lake.  A lot of Tailor still being taken on lures and any type of bait.
The surf is seeing Tailor, Salmon, Snapper and Gummies on Blue Bait, Pilchard, Squid and Eel.  Some very good catches being reported so its a great time to get amongst them Pagey
APR

17 April 2010: Lake or Surf - all good...

All good at Lake Tyers with some good Bream around the 40cm mark being taken on local Prawns in the deeper drop offs.  Some anglers also getting results on vibes in around 4 to 5 meters of water.
Some Flatties being taken on plastics and some good catches reported on Gars which are everywhere in the lake at the moment.
The surf is still seeing Snapper, Salmon ,Tailor and the odd Flathead best bait still Bluebait,Squid and Pilchard, so with good weather hanging about get amongst them Pagey

8 April 2010: Easter was a bonus time...

Great results from Lake Tyers over the Easter long break and congratulations to the Lake Tyers Beach Angling Club on a well run Bream fishing comp.  Some good Bream still being taken on Prawn over much of the lake.  We managed some nice Flathead on plastics in the shallows from the banks down the bottom of the lake.
The surf produced Snapper, Trevally
Salmon and Flathead. The best bait continued to be Bluebait and Squid, but great to see the variety of fish being caught.  I am heading to Cameron's Hole this afternoon so will be able to report on this next week.   So good luck and get amongst them Pagey
MAR

31 March 2010: Easter is looking good.

The surf has produced some great results this past week with Salmon, Tailor, Snapper and Flathead being reported taking mainly Bluebait, with Squid and Pilchard the main back ups.
The lake is seeing some good Bream on local Prawns with many up around 40cm, so try big prawns and big hooks, and enjoy better fish.  Some Flathead on vibes or plastics or baits, but they are starting to move up the arms.  A lot of Tailor starting to become active, so if all else fails troll a lure and they will find you.   So with good weather, and for some a few days off, get out and get amongst them Pagey

25 March 2010: Local Prawn the go....

I managed a couple of days on the water this week with some pleasing results.  Some good Bream on local Prawns which I have in stock for the first time this season.  They are a little bigger and I went up in hook size, consequently we were left alone by the smaller Bream and as a result the quality of what we caught was good.  With a couple of Flathead hitting also these large prawns, it was a very good result.
The surf is still producing plenty of results Salmon, Tailor, Flathead and some nice Snapper on Pilchard,Bluebait and Squid it is shaping up good for the Easter break so if youve got the time get amongst them Pagey

17 March 2010: Warm days and the Bream are hot.

The fishing in Lake Tyers has been really productive over the last week with some good catches of Bream on Prawns being reported.  Best Bream times are in the morning, and in 5 metres of water.  Some Flatties are still taking plastics on the flats, and if they take a bait, they seem to prefer Bluebait .
The surf is seeing the usual catches of
Salmon and Tailor, and still some Snapper.  Best baits are Pilchard Bluebait and Squid.  They are still getting Prawns in the lake, which means everything is holding up well, so get out and get amongst them  - get amongst them Pagey

12 March 2010: It's time to chase the Bream

Lake Tyers is seeing a lot of Bream being taken on Prawns and vibes in 5 metres of water.  The Flathead are a little harder to find, but the sand flats early and near dusk on plastics and bluebait are a good start.
The surf has been pretty exciting with Salmon, Tailor and a few Snapper as well as the odd Gummy have made it active over the last week.  Best baits have been Pilchard, Bluebait, Squid and Eel.
The Prawns are becoming harder, although some are still getting catches.  With the weather reports good for the next few days its a good time to  - get amongst them Pagey

4 March 2010: Flathead and others ...

The fishing at Lake Tyers has seen some interesting results during the past week with some nice Flathead being taken drifting with Bluebait, as well as plastics accounting for a few.  Dave Hocking caught a nice bag of Bream on Prawns fishing up near Camerons Hole.   He also reported seeing Garfish in large numbers which always are great fun to catch.  Heard of a few Pinkies being taken on Pilchard, some Tailor taking every thing, and Prawns still running. So a bit going on.  The surf continues to produce Salmon, Tailor and Snapper.   Best baits are Pilchard, Bluebait and Squid on top of tide is the best time.   So with plenty of choices, and a long weekend ahead get out and  - get amongst them Pagey
FEB

11 February 2010: Bream are showing up...

Lake Tyers has been good this week after 50m of rain a lot of small Bream taking Prawn with vibes taking some bigger ones.  Most of the good Bream are in 5metres of water. Good reports of Flathead on plastics and the bait fishermen are preferring Bluebait.  The surf is still producing good Salmon and best baits are Squid and Bluebait on the top or bottom of the tide.  The Prawns have slowed a little, but the ones have been caught are very big, so with a good weekend in front of us    -   get amongst them Pagey

11 February 2010: Given it a go and caught a few

The fishing at lake tyers has been patchy with some good catches of Bream taking Prawns.  The Flathead have been hard to find, but those with luck are using Pilchard and Blue Bait, plus some still getting caught on plastics on the sand flats. The surf is providing Salmon and Flathead on Blue Bait ,Squid and Pilchard.  Finally we still have Prawns running in the lake, so there are plenty of options so go out and   -   get amongst them Pagey

5 February 2010: Have the Tyers Bream come on the bite?

Well as I write today's report it is great to see the wind has finally dropped.  I have had a couple of charters of late with very mixed results. We have only managed a few Flathead on plastics and vibes, and they were a lot of work.  The good news is the Bream have been smashing Prawns in the deeper drop offs, and as well we have sighted some large Garfish, so if you fancy some fun berley up, and you will be rewarded.  Plenty of Taylor taking lures and Pilchard.  The surf has been a little quiet but I put that down to the conditions of late.   On checking the forecast for the next few days it looks much better, so it's a good time to  -   get amongst them Pagey
JAN

27 January 2010: Flatties keep us on the go...

Lake Tyers continues to produce Flathead on the sand flats in and around the channel markers using soft plastics in the bottom of the lake. Bream have been taking Prawn and Crabs and are getting agressive around snags and drop offs. Some nice Luderick being taken on weed under a float- many over 2kg.  The surf sees Salmon and Flathed taking Bluebait and Squid but still use a popper as well. The Gummies should be here this weekend so eel would be a good option. Some prawns still running although they appear to be a little harder to get good numbers.  All in all, a bit of hard work will see good results so -  get amongst them Pagey

15 January 2010: Warming up! Fishing and weather!

Lake Tyers has seen some good fish caught this week the best Flathead 94cm a Bream at 48cm being the best I have heard. Having said that you have to work hard early morning and dusk are best. Plastics and bait both ok, with best bait Prawn or Pilchard. The surf has seen Salmon and Flathead enjoying Bluebait and Squid on the top or bottom of the tide. The bottom of the lake is still producing Prawns at night with many out with their prawn lights.  With a great forcast this weekend it is a good chance to -  get amongst them Pagey

7 January 2010: Big Flathead are out there...

Lake Tyers has seen good catches of Flathead with the best I've heard was a 94cm caught by 'Pirate' Mick Sutton on plastics up the main arm.  Bait fishermen have also had good results.  Best baits are Prawn Pilchards and Bluebait with reports that the Bream are finally being caught in numbers with some nice fish landed on vibes, and bait Prawns best options.  Plenty of Prawns running at night so a lot of activity after dark.  The surf saw Gummies,Salmon and Flathead taking Squid, Bluebait, Eel and Pilchard with many mixed catches.  We had a young bloke from Albury on our charter boat during the week that got a 75cm Flathead on plastics, his first fish on this method.  He still can't get the smile off his face.
So with the fishing improving daily -  get amongst them Pagey
